What the formula returns

Valid / Invalid

The official VIES answer, the one tax authorities expect you to check before zero-rating an intra-EU invoice.

Registered name & address

Where the member state publishes them — handy to spot a number that belongs to someone else.

Whole columns

=VAT(A2:A500) checks 500 numbers with one formula. Results are cached for 6 hours.

Pick your fields

=VAT(A2;"valid") for a single yes/no column, or any mix of valid, name, address, country, number, checked.

France never down

When VIES France is saturated (it happens daily), French numbers are verified against the INSEE register instead.

Also in French

=TVA(A2) works the same, with French field names (valide, nom, adresse…).

Frequently asked questions

Where does the data come from?

From VIES, the European Commission's VAT Information Exchange System, queried live. For French numbers, the INSEE Sirene register is used as a fallback when VIES France is unavailable.

Is my spreadsheet data stored?

No. The add-on reads only the VAT number in the cell you pass to the formula, sends it to VIES, and writes the answer back. Nothing else is read or stored. See the privacy policy.

Which countries are supported?

All 27 EU member states plus Northern Ireland (XI). UK numbers (GB) are not supported yet.

Why does Germany return no name?

Some member states (Germany, Spain for individuals…) do not publish the registered name through VIES. The validity check still works.

Is this proof for the tax office?

The result shows the date of the check. For a VIES consultation number, use the official VIES website; this add-on is a bulk-checking convenience, not a legal archive.

How do I cancel?

From the link in your subscription e-mail, in one click. No commitment.
